  1. Dear translator!

  3. This readme describes what has to be done to translate and
  4. maintain a catalog for MakeCD. Every translator will get a
  5. free MakeCD Private version and will of course be named in
  6. the credits. Translation of the manual hasn't started yet
  7. and will be coordinated by Angela Schmidt.
  8.  
  9. I (Patrick Ohly) am responsible for the catalog. Please
  10. contact me at patrick@core.de if you want to do a certain
  11. language. I can tell you if we still need a translator
  12. for it and give you the necessary files. Please tell
  13. me also if I may send you changed strings for translation
  14. in the future automatically. For obvious reasons
  15. I'd prefer people who are able to maintain a language in the
  16. future, although others are welcome, too ;-)

  18. I decided not to use .ct files. Instead, all catalogs are
  19. compiled from the same source file with a custom catalog
  20. compiler ("MakeCatCLI"). This has several advantages. If I
  21. change or add a string I can do it in all languages
  22. simultaneously. If I cannot change a foreign language I can
  23. mark a string as changed and leave translating it to others.
  24. You can read both the original English and German version of
  25. a string when translating or any other already available
  26. language.

  28. The drawback are increased costs for coordination and
  29. merging of the different languages. You can make this a lot
  30. easier by following these rules:
  31. - Don't change lines in the source file that belong to
  32.   other languages.
  33. - Don't use an editor which would replace TABs with spaces
  34.   or changes the text automatically in any other way.
  35. - If you think that a string should be changed in another
  36.   language, don't do it the source file. Collect these
  37.   remarks in another file and sent them to me seperately.
  38.   I'll do these changes, if I agree.
  39. - Submit only fully translated and final versions of your
  40.   translation (as far as something can be "final" at all ;-)
  41.  
  42. The source file "GUI_Locale.h" is a simple C header file and
  43. uses C style character escapes within strings (\n, \t, \", etc.)
  44. and string merging. The file itself includes more remarks
  45. about the strings and a history of changes. Strings that
  46. have been changed or need to be translated are marked with
  47. "@@" at the beginning. MakeCD will ignore such strings and
  48. use the English default instead.
  49.  
  50. A few things should be regarded to deliver a good catalog:
  51. - Test your catalog with a PAL screen with 640x256 pixels
  52.   and topaz.8. All windows have to open on such a screen.
  53.   A screen on a graphic card with the same size is not
  54.   sufficient, because the different pixel ratio actually
  55.   makes a difference.
  56.   We decided to make it possible to use MakeCD even on older
  57.   Amigas and there are really some people who could not use
  58.   MakeCD otherwise (not the least of them Angela herself -
  59.   she connects the CD writers to a secondary Amiga with a
  60.   1081).
  61.   Some strings might not be used in the last public release
  62.   yet. I'll send you beta versions of MakeCD itself only if
  63.   it is really necessary. Thanks for your understanding!
  64. - Pay attention to the key shortcuts in the gadget texts.
  65.   No key should be used twice.
  66. - Please try to use the same text layout as in the other
  67.   language entries. It really helps maintaining the file.

  69. You can add your name to the about requester text
  70. (ALL_TXT_ABOUT) if you like to.

  72. Creating your catalog is done with MakeCat[CLI]:
  73. "MakeCatCLI Catalogs/deutsch/MakeCD.catalog D GUI_Locale.h"
  74. for the German catalog. The "D" is the identifier used in
  75. the GUI_Locale.h for the German strings. This is a list of
  76. identifiers for other languages:

  83. NL - nederlands

  87. Other identifiers can be introduced for other languages,
  88. too.
